Graduate Research Opportunities
SREL offers graduate students an excellent opportunity to pursue a wide range of research, basic or applied, laboratory or field-based, and to collaborate with a diverse group of scientists. SREL faculty expertise spans multiple levels of biological organization, from the atomic and molecular level to ecosystem and landscape-scale processes. SREL researchers study both natural and impacted ecosystems, and applied research ranges from contaminant transport and remediation to rare species conservation and management. SREL also offers top-notch analytical facilities and the opportunity to conduct field research on the Savannah River Site, an outdoor laboratory without parallel. The SRS's long history of intensive ecological study, diversity of ecosystems, and mix of natural and impacted areas combine to make the SRS an ideal location for ecological research. Although SREL is a research unit of the University of Georgia, graduate students enrolled at other institutions are also eligible. Research is jointly supervised by the student's university research committee and an advisor at SREL. Preliminary degree requirements are completed at the student's home institution. Currently, graduate student support is through the student's home institution or through research grants awarded to SREL faculty. Students interested in graduate research at SREL should contact faculty in their area of study. Since 1967 over 400 students have completed M.S. or Ph.D. research at SREL. During the past two and a half decades SREL graduate students have won more than 200 awards in regional, national, and international competitions, and SREL students continue to demonstrate excellence in environmental research. |
